Custo Barcelona - Vibrant, Energized, a-washed in color
In the early 1980s, David and Custodio Dalmau launched their fashion business, designing and making T-shirts for men. The two brothers hit the road for inspiration and quickly fell in love with the California lifestyle and the surfer scene.
The Dalmau brothers saw a market for brightly colored T-shirts that sported funky patterns. Custo Barcelona evolved from this concept. This was around 1996 when minimalism was at the height of fashion, Custo was a breathe of much needed color and design in the monochromic fashion world.
Growing up in Barcelona, the brothers had many influences including Spain’s own Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi was born in late 1800’s and is well regarded as ahead of his time in architecture. Known for his whimsical style and the use of color and natural shapes. I suspect his buildings influenced the Dalmau brothers in their own creative process. They showed their first collection in New York during the fall fashion week in 1997. Syl Tang reporting from New York Fashion Week said of Custo “Flashy. Cool. The look is Faye Dunaway gone British urchin meets 1970's housecoat prints”!

Bold fun graphics splashed with bight colors created excitement in the American fashion scene. Hollywood celebrities to pop artists began donning the Custo Barcelona designs, which catapulted the label to the next level. The brothers were now designing full collections for men, women and even children.
